Vote to override a veto of a bill that raises the tax on cigarettes from $0.18/pack to $0.75/pack, effective upon passage, and from $0.75/pack to $1.00/pack, effective July 1, 2007. The bill also levies a 15 percent excise tax on snuff and other tobacco products, excluding cigarettes. The bill creates the Municipal Tobacco Tax Diversion Fund and provides that a portion of revenue generated from cigarette tax revenue be distributed to the Municipal Tobacco Tax Diversion Fund, the Education Enhancement Fund, and the School Ad Valorem Tax Reduction Fund. Additionally, the bill decreases, as of July 1, 2006, the tax on non-prepared food for human consumption to 4.5 percent and to gradually phase out the tax by July 1, 2014.
